These sleeves are intended to peek out of the split sleeves of the
houpplande. They are removable and will eventually have an Elizabethan doublet to match. My original thought was just to use eggplant colored upholstery velvet. The plain velvet looked barren. Pearls on a diagonal grid looked better. Gold cord diamonds outlining the the grid looked the best.
After a lot of looking around for sleeve ideas, I decided to modify a modern man's shirt sleeve pattern. I will add the details of the procedure at a later date.
I moved the seam to the back of the arm, raised the sleeve cap a bit and lowered the armhole slightly. The larger armscye will allow some fabric to peek out when the sleeves are worn over a shirt.
Embellishing the sleeves took a LONG time. I marked the diamond grid on the fabric using waxy tailor's chalk and a long straightedge. Then I stitched a
pearl in the center of each diamond with double thread, passing the needle through the pearl twice and knotting the thread between each pearl. If one comes loose, the rest will not follow!
